Are Retro Helmets Noisy When Riding?

Yes, broadly speaking, most retro helmets are comparatively noisier than modern-looking counterparts when riding. Nonetheless, many are less noisy than they used to be. Let me explain.

Noise damping is usually less effective on old-school-style lids because their smooth vintage domes make them less aerodynamic. However, it’s mostly due to the wider open space around the chin bar where air rushes in. Naturally, Open-face and three-quarter designs are louder still.

Bell-Bullitt (MK 1) Carbon RSD Helmet

I’ve affectionately named my RSD Carbon Bell Bullitt ‘Whistler’ because of the noise it makes as the wind rushes in. I never wear it without earplugs. My Hedon Heroine Racer is far quieter by a clear margin.

All that said, both of these classic-style brain buckets, along with others in the vintage-inspired segment, have been updated to ECE 22.06 in the last couple of years. Some now ship with a wind guard, which helps.

The design construction is evolving, and retro helmets are getting quieter, but collectively they are not quiet. Wear earplugs.
