Whatever the styling, every new lid sold in the UK or Europe has to meet the ECE 22.06 safety standard. The US federally mandates that manufacturers self-certify to DOT FMVSS No. 218.
Interiors tend to be more plush in retro helmets. The Bell Bullitt GT and the Hedon Heroine use suede and leather where you might find synthetic fabric in modern-style equivalents.
That aside, let’s get one thing straight: you’ll have to make a few compromises when you go down the vintage-inspired route. But not as many as you might think and certainly not on safety. Noise is the main concern in some vintage-style helmets, particularly at motorway speeds.
