BMW’s history, rich with innovation and legendary motorcycles, began with the merger of two aviation companies. Post-World War I restrictions pushed BMW into motorcycle production, leading to the creation of the R32 in 1923, featuring the now-iconic flat-twin ‘Boxer’ engine. This configuration became synonymous with BMW — known for its durability and reliability.
Fast forward 90 years, BMW Motorrad introduced its first retro motorcycle, the R nineT, in celebration of the 90th anniversary of the Boxer-twin engine. Designed under former head designer Ola Stenegärd, the R nineT marked a departure from BMW’s forward-looking designs, paving the way for the brand’s Heritage line.
The launch of the R nineT signalled a paradigm shift in the retro motorcycle market — retro looks and retro performance were replaced by modern performance with retro looks.
The successful R nineT gave rise to several variants, including the Urban G/S, Scrambler, Pure and Racer, before being replaced by the MY2024 R 12 nineT.
BMW’s influence has been pivotal in strengthening the retro motorcycle segment, blending nostalgic design with modern technology.
