Belstaff Phoenix Day Sale

Much of the sale is casualwear, because that’s where Belstaff’s collection is deepest. But fear not, riders! You’ll find plenty of clobber, worthy of your attention, from the motorcycle collection. (There are armoured motorcycle jackets in leather, textile and waxed cotton, along with boots and accessories in the sale, all reduced by 30%.)

Here are some of the pieces that caught my eye.

Belstaff Men’s Motorcycle Phoenix Day Sale

Belstaff’s men’s motorcycle range leans on hand-waxed leather jackets, armoured gloves and boots. Here are the pieces I’d look at first.

Brooklands Motorcycle Jacket, Antique Black: £857, was £1,225

A full-grain cow leather jacket, hand-waxed over 18 hours for water repellency. It has D3O shoulder and elbow armour, a back protector pocket and an oil-resistant corduroy collar and cuffs. It’s CE A-rated, so it suits lower-speed riding, but that’s the right level for the way most people ride something like this. The waxed finish takes on a patina of its own.

Trialmaster Motorcycle Jacket, Burnt Cuero

The same hand-waxed cow leather, with D3O Tri-ventilation level 1 armour at the shoulders and elbows. Swivel sleeves and underarm metal air vents are what set it apart from the Brooklands, and they make it easier to wear on a long ride. It’s CE A-rated. For me, the Burnt Cuero finish is the draw, because it looks like a jacket that has already done some miles.

Hampstead Glove, Black: £77, was £110

Goatskin leather with technical waxed cotton on the top fingers and cuff. It’s perforated for breathability and has leather-covered knuckle protection, palm padding, CE level 1 and touchscreen-friendly index fingers. A glove with real protection that still looks like proper Belstaff, at this price, is the easiest buy in the sale.

Endurance Motorcycle Boots: £245, was £350

These are Belstaff classic waxed, water-repellent full-grain buffalo leather biker boots with ankle protectors, toe and heel reinforcement, a waterproof membrane and a Vibram sole. The longer shaft gives more leg protection than a short boot. They’re built for long days in the saddle but are comfortable when you’re walking around town.

Competition T-shirt, Black: £56, was £80

A black T-shirt from the Competition range, and the easy casual pick if you want something from the sale that isn’t leather.

Belstaff Women’s Motorcycle Phoenix Day Sale

The women’s picks cover two different approaches to riding wear: classic waxed cotton and lighter stretch nylon.

Named after the corner on the Isle of Man TT course, and a firm favourite with Belstaff riders. It’s dry-waxed 8oz cotton with a waterproof, breathable membrane, removable D3O shoulder and elbow armour, a back protector pocket and underarm vents. It’s AA rated, which is a step up from the leather jackets above. If I wanted one jacket for year-round riding in the UK weather, this would be on my shortlist.

Trent Motorcycle Jacket, Black: £315, was £450

Belstaff Womens Trent Motorcycle Jacket Black Back

A lightweight women’s jacket in Armaflex 4-way stretch nylon, which Belstaff developed for itself. It’s AA rated and has D3O Diablo armour at the shoulders and elbows, a back protector pocket and a silicone-coated snap at the front to protect the tank. It’s a modern, lighter option next to the waxed jackets, and the stretch should make it easy to ride in.
